Steve's Story: A Never Ending Story
Excerpt from Rescued from Hell, Chapter 7: Journey to Healing
This is as far as I'm going to take you, for now, on this healing journey. The ending I have brought you to is not the end; life has few moments when loose ends seem nicely tied off and nothing else is unraveling at the moment. No, there is actually too much left to fit in here, but all of it can wait for another time. My purpose in this narrative has been to carry you along on my journey of descent into hell, rescue, and return to "normal" Christian living. That is the place I came into some years back when I realized that I finally felt like a human being again and that I was "bored" with my story, so fully had my inward sight shifted from my past to His future. There is a stage to being healed where the very thing you didn't want God or anyone else to know, you now want to tell to the world. Beyond that is the stage where you no longer care if you ever tell it again - unless He asks it of you. He asked it of me, and now I have told it, fully believing that this is the season I decided to wait for in the aftermath of Honduras, when the wine of my testimony would reach maturity and could be freely shared at last.
The truth is that our journeys never end; they stretch from here to heaven, where the real adventure finally begins. For now I can only say how grateful I am to have had this opportunity to write to you. It has brought the One my heart loves very close to my side as I laughed and cried my way through these remembrances. I hope it has also brought Him close to you. Have you, perhaps, heard a faint "echo" of His whispering? It would be very much like the Lord to cast His light - light as a feather - upon some dark passage in your life as you have been reading about my own.
Are we really so different? As bizarre as my life has been, is it not in some rudimentary ways but a reflection of your own? You, too, against all odds and beyond all deserving, have been rescued from hell. A Great Love has also been pursuing you, laying claim to your heart and fighting for your freedom from the depredations of an unseen enemy. Though that battle took center stage in my life, it is no less real if it has been going on behind the scenes in yours. Whether we realize it or not, all of us who believe in Jesus have a tale to tell of desperate peril and impossible rescue, of unimaginable grace and glorious return!
